Watching some of the Sunday morning news programs. The different talking points are obvious and different levels of subtle.
CBS is focusing on stats for complications of COVID positive children and emphasizing that pediatric cases are on the rise. Fear mongering for sure and hitting us where we are most sensitive.
NBC is being very subtle with their message and it is scary in its implications. I watched for 30 minutes and heard the term "contact tracing" too many times to count. Not on its own though, but as a combined strategy of testing, distancing and contact tracing as the way to get a handle on the viral crisis.
Testing, distancing, mask wearing and flu protocols I can see the science and the effectiveness of these. I understand the idea of contact tracing as well, on a voluntary basis, but in the same breath, all of the major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS) are out crying that we cannot rely on the individual citizens to comply with common sense actions so there must be mandates and penalties/enforcement handed down from the government in order to force compliance for public safety.
Ok.
Perhaps.
However, when you lump contact tracing into that requirement it lends to abuse. You are here for a COVID test to prove that you can go back/continue to work? To comply with safety guidelines we need you to tell us where you have been and who you have associated with over the past 7-14 days. If you cannot or will not provide the information, we cannot clear you for work. If you provide false or incomplete information then here are the penalties for putting others at risk by doing so. If you are not sure then we can accept cell phone tracking data as a substitute. Yes, the programs are already active. Do you have Google Maps?
Is that not a worrisome thing that we are allowing to happen in the name of safety? There will always be those that say "that's no problem, I have nothing to hide" and move forward, but as many times as the goalposts have moved in the past few months, how can we be sure that the things we admitted to today are still acceptable, unjudged or even legal in the next few months.
Be wary and be aware of the subtle pushes that are happening and that some are trying to get you to accept.
