The fact that the sitting President literally said that no amendment to the Constitution is absolute is the most patently ridiculous thing I have ever read or heard. He was, of course, referring to the 2nd amendment which his party has forever been in favor of disposing of. But if you take his statement at face value, what does that mean?
Since the government can infringe on our rights to bear arms, does that also mean they can put us into slavery or indentured servitude without our being convicted of a crime?
If no amendment is absolute, the why all of the outcry over new voting laws? After all, if gun rights can be infringed, then why not voting rights whether the policies are actually racist or not? It's just a Constitutional amendment that protects that.
If no amendment is absolute, then I am confused, is alcohol legal or illegal at this point in time?
My favorite though and the main reason that I hope this statement catches on is in reference to the 16th amendment. If no amendment is absolute, how long do you think the IRS will let me get away with not paying my taxes?
There are directions that you can come from on gun control, but calling Constitutional amendments into question isn't one of them. It's a desperate position that will earn you more detractors than supporters and one that a coherent politician would never utter publicly even if they believe it privately.
I think it's a window into the background of everything that is going on because the current President is doing his best to do what his handlers are telling him with limited faculties at his disposal.
In the game of politics, what you don't say is nearly as important as what you do say and I think the President is slipping on his secondary goals of not letting masses know the truth of the stances that leadership is taking.
I am glad he said this. It's our window into reality, not the puppet show that we normally get.
